Teaching Pilates Mat for Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is one of the trickiest diagnoses to work with for a Pilates teacher since so much of Pilates, and especially Pilates mat, is in forward thoracic flexion which is completely contraindicated for people with low bone density. While it is quite easy to find existing Pilates exercises and modify some on the Pilates equipment (especially the reformer and chair), mat work can be trickier.

The professional Pilates folks behind Pilates Digest recently sent me a copy of their new ebook package, Pilates Mat Program for Osteoporosis Clients: Guidelines and Exercises for the Pilates Professional and Standing Pilates Program for Osteoporosis Clients, and I am impressed!

Together the books offer a clear and concise guide to osteoporosis specific strengthening exercises for Pilates teachers. The photos are clear, the instructions easy to understand, and the brief explanation of this insidious bone depleting disease will help Pilates teachers understand what their clients are experiencing. Books like this are very important given the rising numbers of women (and men) with low bone density. Plus, so many traditional Pilates mat exercises are in forward thoracic flexion that it is crucial to have guides like this before moving forward with mat training for osteoporotic clients.

With a total of 35 exercises there is enough material here for a creative instructor to put together challenging yet safe Pilates workouts for anyone with osteoporosis. I highly recommend this product!

Buy both the Pilates Mat Program for Osteoporosis Clients: Guidelines and Exercises for the Pilates Professional and Standing Pilates Program for Osteoporosis Clients for only $24.95!
